Spark R&D Celebrates 20 Years of Innovation in Splitboarding

Since its founding by Will Ritter, Spark R&D has grown from a passion-driven startup into the most respected name in its corner of the industry. They’ve earned the trust of riders across the globe through relentless innovation, commitment, high quality manufacturing, and drive to make splitboarding more fun and accessible.

What began as Will’s vision to re-imagine the backcountry snowboarding experience has evolved into an integrated operation that designs, manufactures, and assembles its own products in-house at its Bozeman, Montana facility. Over the past two decades, Spark R&D has remained splitboarder owned and operated, and focused solely on splitboarding, a difference that separates them in the industry and one that allows for real backcountry research and development.

“Twenty years ago, I put up a post on Splitboard.com showing my prototype binding idea to the core splitboard community, and the response was insane,” Ritter remembers. “I thought people would say – that’s cool, have fun with your arts and crafts time – but instead, they all wanted to buy a set, so I started a waiting list…. Then I had to figure out how to make 10, then 20, then 100. The rest is history.”

From the start, Spark R&D has built its reputation by prioritizing performance, strength, and real-world rider feedback in every binding and accessory it develops. The company attributes its success and premium products to having full control over its own manufacturing & design.
