SOME THING ELSE
a backcountry ski film
For our tenth film we wanted to do something special. So all we did was capture our deepest powder ever, expeditions to the most remote mountain ranges, and the steepest spines on the planet. Combined with the most interesting characters on snow, and our usual low brow humor, and we have a ski movie worthy of our ten years filming the backcountry experience.
Part ski porn, part documentary, this is a full on propaganda piece promoting the joys and wonder of exploring winter on skis and split-board. It’s our business and pleasure to break trail with those who are willing to put in the time, education and respect the mountains deserve and record it for posterity.
This year we headed out looking for Some Thing Else, and we found it.
-A last minute dream trip to Hokkaido, Japan with Eric Balken, Will Cardamone, Megan Michelson and Dan Abrams.
-A yurt stay in The Beartooth Mountains of Montana with Carston Oliver, Eric Balken, Ben Nobel and Alyssa Larson.
-Steep spine clinic with Neil Provo in the Tordrillo Mountains of Alaska.
-Phat Camp with Andrew McLean, Thomas Gaisbacher and Noah Howell in the Wrangell St Elias National Park and Preserve.
-Paul Kimbrough in the mighty Tetons crusading to resuscitate telemark skiing.
-Snowy Mountain Lodge in British Columbia hosts JP Auclair, Kalen Thorien, Ian Provo and Riley Leboe.
-A look into the mind and the turns of Freeride World Tour Champion Drew Tabke.
-Geoff McAndrews shows us the ups and downs of his world in the Salt River Range of Wyoming.
-Carston Oliver and happy fun times jumping crevasses in Alaska.

Revelstoke, British Columbia — The Canuck Splitfest, presented by Prior, is an annual splitboard gathering at Rogers Pass, BC. The inaugural event was held January 22-23, 2011 thanks to Wade Galloway. Wade’s enthusiasm to support the Canadian Avalanche Center allowed this event to grow quickly. This past winter, Wade passed away in an avalanche, which left us all in disarray. Prior and the CAC will keep organizing this event in his honor.
Last year’s fourth annual event saw over 250 splitboarders attend, making it one of the largest splitboard gatherings on the planet. Join us for this event and enter to win lots of prizes by buying raffle tickets! The proceeds support the Canadian Avalanche Foundation for their Canadian Avalanche Center fund and Craig Kelly Memorial Scholarship fund.

So we’ll be traveling to unknown locations in the Alps again this year to find the best possible conditions and touring. It’s as much an adventure as an event, but we’ll have our own snow forecasters again, so powder guaranteed.
We’re pretty stoked to make it another great weekend with old friends and new participants!
The most important goal is to have fun splitboarding, whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned pro. We’ll have demo gear available thanks to our awesome sponsors, and for those without their own gear we can arrange rental gear too. And you can win very cool prices again in this year’s surprise contest.
Some changes from last year: Respect the Mountains is our partner this year. We’ll take a more sustainable approach and will offer group transport to reduce CO2 emissions. What remains is our principle that this should be a free and non-commercial event, where everybody has a great time.

The 5th Annual Vancouver Island Backcountry Festival takes place at Mt. Cain on Feb. 7-8. We will once again be offering guided tours by donation, with ACMG certified guides whose goal will be to take people out and explore while offering advice, tips, and education along the way. The gear raffle takes place on Saturday where we will be raffling off gear donated by our sponsors. All proceeds from the raffle and guided tours go to support the Vancouver Island Avalanche Centre Society, enabling us to continue to provide forecasting for the island. Saturday night will host the now legendary backcountry party, where we will setup more than our share of lights, lasers and speakers outside in the snow, with multiple DJ’s to keep people dancing into the early hours of the morning.

The 3rd Edition of the Manzana Split Festival 2015 will be 13, 14, and 15 February.
With this new edition, we want to let people know about Splitboarding, we would like to make Splitboarders conscious about safety in the mountains. In other words, we want to spread at national and world wide level Splitboarding, Snowboarding and the mountain world.
It will take place in Sotres, a wonderful village in Picos de Europa, which is always willing to cooperate with us.
Our goal for the MSF is to establish the event as a benchmark for splitboard festival in Spain. We aim to bring together fans of this new discipline across the country for a weekend, to market our new activity and exchange ideas, experiences, feelings. We also want to show our mountains and placing Asturias again on the national map in a fresh and innovative activity is the splitboard.

Exum's 3-day Snowboard Mountaineering Clinic is for splitboarders who would like to ride some of the best snowboard terrain in the [...]
The clinic is designed to give intermediate backcountry snowboarders the chance to progress to the next level, and take on a high peak.
If you ride blues and blacks at your local resort; or snowboard in the backcountry; or if you think you’re ready for steeper and more technical terrain — this clinic is for you.
We are offering this clinic with two options: lodging included or you can come for just the snowboarding.
You will spend 1 day on Snow King Mountain, also know as the “Town Hill” in Jackson. The accessibility and high concentration of expert terrain make this a perfect venue for steep snowboarding skills, introduction to technical rope work, or just refining your turns.
The skills you practice will then be put to the test for the next 2 days while we venture up in the high peaks of the Tetons. Exum Guides are comprised of American Mountain Guides Association trained guides, AASI instructors and some of the most accomplished snowboard guides in the business. This is your chance to get coached by the best!
The list of topics and skills covered includes : Gear selection, knots, introduction to technical rope work, use of an ice axe, crampons, steep snowboarding technique, partner communication, terrain assessment and hazard evaluation. Participants should be comfortable snowboarding blue terrain and harder, and be able to skin up a minimum of 4,000 feet in a day. Come to this camp fit and you will have more fun!
Please call Brendan Burns (307-690-6677) or the Exum office (307-733-2297) if you have questions, or to register.

Instead of battling crowds and sneaking your way through endless lines, splitboarding opens countless new possibilities. You find yourself driving past the resorts, past the huge parking grounds, past the crowds and continue your drive to the backcountry. You climb your way to the top through fresh powder. You earn your lines. As more and more riders discover splitboarding the boundaries of what can be done (both up and down the mountain) continues to be pushed. The community grows. Sebastian Bichsel and Mario Hari, founders of the Alpine Splitfest, felt the need of a unity, a come-together of the splitboard community which – until now – mainly existed online. The Alpine Splitfest was born.
The goal of the festival is to provide testing possibilities to people interested in splitboarding, to unite splitboarders and to go on tours together. Moreover, the founders want to educate the riders to the ecological impacts and to safety matters. Besides the main programmed, events like a BBQ, live music, DJs, film presentations, mountain yoga and speeches by experienced splitboarders will take place. To support the feeling of ‘pure nature’, riders and guests have the possibility to sleep on the mountain. Food, drinks and lavatories are available.
